Meet Bud

here he is lounging on my couch in my studio...

I would like you to meet Bud, Bud Berman. I carried him home yesterday and I think he is going to stay. I could not resist him at the antique shop, he has lots of hidden charisma! Somewhat of a plain dresser as in naked, but for what I want him for he will fit my needs perfectly, plus for $20 who could resist!! He appears to be made out of fiberglass and hangs nicely on the wall.

...finally something to photograph long necklaces on!

As some of you know I just love old dress forms and have been hunting for one for my studio and to use when I do shows. Although Bud is a he and not a she I think he will add something to my display booth. I plan on decoupaging his lovely form with either antique dictionary papers or muslin, I have not decided as of yet. What do you think? I think the muslin will display the jewelry better but the paper will look really vintage.

Suggestions please!

  1. Oh, I like Bud! It makes me curse the disposal of the plastic bust I had years ago and threw away when it no longer suited my style of decor (I'd painted it hot pink and glued glitter all over it).

Also, check my most current blog entry for info about a dress form that's available at a Steinmart in my neck of the woods. They might be able to send it to you if you're interested. A few months ago Deryn Mentock mentioned that she'd gotten one at her Steinmart, so I immediately ran out to get one. There were two. Apparently, no one else wanted the other one and it's still there for $50!

  2. Handsome and quite the find. While I love the idea of dictionary paper, I think that you are right about the muslin. It would make for a nice neutral background and let your jewelry shine. Besides, I think muslin could have a nice vintagey feel as well.

  3. Bud is neat!! I know what you mean about being hard to find. I found one at an antique place and they called the owner and she only wanted $35. I snatched it up before they could change their mind!! I agree the paper would look cool but might take away from the jewelry.

  4. Bud is a handsome fellow, could easily be turned in to Budette or just a cross dresser lol. I think I'm going to be picking a mannequin up this weekend. I have a choice of fabric or a plasticy or fiberglass or whatever they are made of. I think when I actually see them I'll know which one I want. I'm leaning towards the fabric one but her figure isn't as nice as the other hhhmmm.

  7. He's super cool. You rally lucked out.
I personally like the idea of dictionary pages (or even sheet music pages. . .) But would love to see how you do the muslin. I'm torn too!

  8. Well - I guess it depends on whether you want Bud mostly for display or for photography. Muslin will let the fine details of the jewelry stand out, which would have a hard time competing with dictionary pages. But - you could do a light wash of buff/ivory paint over top of the dictionary pages...
